Qualcomm Bolsters AI Capabilities with VinAI Acquisition

Global technology leader Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of the generative AI division from VinAI, a prominent artificial intelligence research firm based in Hanoi. This strategic move highlights Qualcomm's ongoing commitment to expanding its influence within the AI sector. VinAI is renowned for developing advanced technologies such as computer vision algorithms and language models under the leadership of Hung Bui, a former DeepMind researcher. With this acquisition, Qualcomm aims to enhance its ability to provide innovative AI solutions across various industries.

VinAI, established in 2019 by Bui, primarily concentrates on automotive products powered by AI but also engages in broader AI research initiatives. Supported by Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, the company delivers solutions like in-cabin monitoring, security systems, and smart parking for automakers and clients in other sectors. At its peak, VinAI employed approximately 200 professionals spread over offices in Hanoi, the U.S., and Australia. According to Bui, the expertise of his team in generative AI and machine learning will significantly contribute to Qualcomm’s product lines, including software and chips designed for smartphones, PCs, and vehicles.

This acquisition marks Qualcomm's second major move in the AI space this year, following the earlier purchase of Edge Impulse, a German AI and IoT company. The integration of VinAI's talent and technology positions Qualcomm at the forefront of edge AI development, which CEO Cristiano Amon recently described as a driving force for the tech giant. Bui, who currently serves as VinAI's CEO, is set to join Qualcomm upon the completion of the acquisition, further strengthening their capabilities in this transformative field.
